How I Rented a Car on Iceland

One of the most important and frequent ways of moving around on Iceland is driving a car or hitchhiking. You wanna know why? Iceland does not have trains. It does not even have public transportation system similar to ours in central European countries (buses roaming the country all the time). I read that buses are really rare in Iceland and that if you want to have a sense of freedom regarding your transportation, you should book a car.

So, that´s what I did.

Suzuki Grand Vitara, one of my 2 car options

Suzuki Grand Vitara, one of my two proposed car choices.

Originally, I rented a Suzuki Jimny, a tough little 4×4. But it seems that this baby is booked until summer, so I will get either Suzuki Grand Vitara SUV or Nissan Qashqai. I have rented the car (for a very favourable price for a solo traveler) via Avis.is (or Budget.is). The price for 8 days was 52 460 ISK (408 USD/372 EUR/10 032 CZK). Very good I think.

Of course, it is no small amount either, but I have heard of more expensive vagons rented to tourists. As I am the only passanger, and the only person responsible for the rental, I have booked the car some time before my actual journey (in December, 4 months before my adventure), so I have enough time to save some more money for equipment and other items on the list.

Nissan Qashquai, another of my two car choices in Iceland.

Want to know more about my preparations? Stay tuned! :)
